Zakat is the obligatory annual charity owed by every adult Muslim whose wealth exceeds the nisab threshold. It purifies your wealth, supports those in need, and brings barakah (blessing) to everything you own.
Zakat is a mandatory act of worship — 2.5% of a Muslim's qualifying wealth held for one lunar year. It is a right of the poor within a Muslim's wealth, not merely a voluntary gift.
Zakat is distributed to the eight categories of recipients named in the Qur'an: the poor, the needy, those in debt, travellers in hardship, and others — including orphans, widows, and families displaced by conflict or disaster.
You owe 2.5% on qualifying assets (cash, gold, silver, business stock, and savings) once they exceed the nisab threshold and have been held for one full lunar year.
